How to Resize Images for Instagram

Instagram compresses every upload. To keep your images sharp, you must start with the correct dimensions and aspect ratio. Here's the complete guide for 2025.

Instagram image dimensions cheat sheet

Format Pixels Aspect
Square post1080 × 10801:1
Portrait post1080 × 13504:5
Landscape post1080 × 5661.91:1
Story / Reel1080 × 19209:16
Profile picture320 × 3201:1
IGTV cover420 × 6541:1.55

Why dimensions matter

Instagram re-encodes every image you upload. If your image doesn't match the target aspect ratio, Instagram either:

  • Crops it — cutting off edges you may have wanted to keep
  • Adds letterboxing — white bars above and below, which look unprofessional
  • Downscales it — reducing sharpness and detail

By starting at the exact recommended size, you avoid all three problems.

Step-by-step: resizing for Instagram

  1. Open the image resizer.
  2. Upload your photo.
  3. Click the preset button for your target (Instagram 1080×1080, Insta Story 1080×1920, etc.).
  4. Adjust the crop area if needed.
  5. Download as PNG or JPG.

That's it. Upload the resized image directly to Instagram.

Which format should you use?

Instagram accepts JPG, PNG, and (as of 2024) WEBP. Recommendations:

  • Photos → JPG at quality 85. Smaller file size, no visible quality loss.
  • Graphics with text → PNG. Preserves sharp edges and avoids compression artifacts around letters.
  • Images with transparency → PNG. Instagram flattens transparency to white by default, so plan accordingly.

Why your Instagram photos look blurry

If your photos look soft or blurry after upload, one of these is likely:

  • You uploaded a small image. Instagram upscales to 1080 px wide. If you upload a 500 px image, it gets stretched and looks soft. Always upload at 1080 px.
  • You uploaded a very large image. Instagram downscales files over 1080 px, and its downscaling algorithm is aggressive. Start at 1080 px instead.
  • You compressed too aggressively. Instagram itself compresses to save bandwidth. If you add your own compression at quality 40, the final result looks muddy.
  • You uploaded a JPG that was already compressed. Always start from the original if possible.

Carousel and multi-image posts

Instagram carousels support the same size rules as single posts. Keep all images in a carousel at the same aspect ratio (1:1, 4:5, or 1.91:1) so they appear consistent when swiped. Mixed aspect ratios create visual jumps between slides.

Grid layout tips

Instagram profiles display images in a 3-column grid. If you're planning a coordinated grid, preview the crop using a third-party app or plan each post at 1080×1080. Square posts fit the grid best.

Video and reels

Reels and video posts follow the same 9:16 (1080×1920) rule as stories. Cover images must be uploaded separately — take a screenshot at 1080×1920, or export a frame at that size from your editing tool.

Common mistakes

  1. Uploading a photo directly from a DSLR. A 6000×4000 image will be downscaled and lose sharpness. Resize first.
  2. Using the wrong aspect ratio. A 16:9 landscape photo will be cropped to fit Instagram's 1.91:1 limit — the edges disappear.
  3. Adding text near the edges. Instagram crops profile grid previews to a square. If your text is near the edge, it disappears in the grid.
  4. Ignoring the safe zone for stories. Stories have UI overlays at the top and bottom. Keep important content in the middle 1080×1420 area.
