Shopify Product Image Guide

Product images are the most important asset in a Shopify store. Bad photos tank conversion. Great photos double it. This guide covers Shopify's image requirements, best practices, and the tools you need.

Shopify image requirements

  • Recommended size: 2048 × 2048 px (square)
  • Maximum file size: 20 MB
  • Formats: JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF
  • Aspect ratio: Square (1:1) recommended
  • Images per product: Up to 250 (5–10 recommended)

Why square?

Shopify's default theme displays product images in a square container. Non-square images get letterboxed or cropped automatically. To control exactly what buyers see, upload square images (2048×2048) with consistent padding.

Image sequence for each product

The order of images matters. Buyers scroll through them in order:

  1. Main shot: Clean product on white or transparent background
  2. Alternative angles: Side, back, top
  3. Close-ups: Details that matter (texture, logo, craftsmanship)
  4. Lifestyle: Product in use or in context
  5. Scale reference: Product next to a common object
  6. Infographic: Features, benefits, or comparison (optional)

Step-by-step workflow

Step 1 — Shoot the product

Best practices:

  • Use consistent lighting across all products
  • Shoot against a plain backdrop
  • Shoot at high resolution (4000×4000 or larger)
  • Include multiple angles per product

Step 2 — Remove the background

Use the AI background remover on each product photo. Download the transparent PNG.

Step 3 — Standardize

Use the product photo editor:

  • Choose Shopify preset (2048×2048)
  • Choose transparent or white background
  • Set padding to 8–10%
  • Download

Step 4 — Compress

Use the image compressor:

  • Format: WEBP (best) or JPG
  • Quality: 85
  • Max width: leave as 2048

Typical output: 200–500 KB per image (down from 2–5 MB).

Step 5 — Upload to Shopify

  1. Go to Products → Your product
  2. Upload images in the sequence above
  3. Set the first image as the main product photo
  4. Save

Transparent vs white background

White background (recommended for most stores):

  • Consistent look across all products
  • Works well with any theme
  • Similar to Amazon and other marketplaces

Transparent background:

  • Blends into your theme's background color
  • Good if your store has a strong visual style
  • Requires your theme to support transparency (most do)

Image optimization for page speed

Large images slow down your store and hurt SEO. Follow these rules:

  • Use WEBP format where possible (25–35% smaller than JPG)
  • Compress to quality 85 — imperceptible loss
  • Don't upload 4000 px images if display size is 500 px
  • Enable lazy loading in your theme
  • Use Shopify's CDN — it auto-optimizes if configured

Product image SEO

Images affect SEO through alt text and file names:

  • File name: Use descriptive names like blue-cotton-tshirt.jpg, not IMG_4523.jpg
  • Alt text: Describe the product clearly. "Blue cotton t-shirt, front view" is better than "product image".
  • Title: Match the product title

Common mistakes

  1. Inconsistent backgrounds. Mixing lifestyle and white backgrounds looks messy. Use one primary style.
  2. Oversized files. A 5 MB product image slows down your store and hurts SEO.
  3. Too few images. One image per product isn't enough. Show multiple angles.
  4. Blurry photos. A blurry phone photo looks worse than a sharp one from an older camera.
  5. Watermarks. Shopify doesn't require watermarks, and they look unprofessional.

Frequently asked questions

What size should Shopify product images be?

2048×2048 px is the recommended standard. It's large enough for zoom on high-res screens, and Shopify displays it well on all devices.

Should I use transparent or white backgrounds?

White is safest. Transparent works if your theme has a colored background. Both are common; consistency matters more than the choice itself.
