How to Remove Background in Google Slides
Google Slides doesn't have a built-in background remover. To insert a subject cutout into a slide, you need to prepare the image first with a free tool. Here's the workflow.
Does Google Slides remove backgrounds?
No. Google Slides can remove a background color from a slide (Format → Background), but it cannot remove the background from an image inside the slide. For that, you need to prepare the image before uploading.
The workflow
- Remove the background from your image. Use the AI background remover or the transparent PNG maker.
- Download the transparent PNG.
- Open Google Slides.
- Insert → Image → Upload from computer. Choose the transparent PNG.
- Arrange, resize, and layer with other elements.
Which removal method?
- Photos of people, products, pets: Use AI background remover
- Logos, illustrations, screenshots on solid background: Use transparent PNG maker (faster, runs locally)
Inserting the transparent PNG in Google Slides
- Click where you want the image.
- Insert → Image → Upload from computer (or drag the PNG into the slide).
- The image appears with transparency preserved.
- Use the corner handles to resize (hold Shift to keep proportions).
- Right-click → Order to send behind or bring in front of other elements.
Common issues
Image has a white background when inserted
This means the image you uploaded isn't a transparent PNG — it's a JPG or a PNG with a white background. Re-check the download — it should be PNG and show a checkerboard pattern in a viewer.
Image looks blurry
Google Slides compresses images. If your image is very large (5000×5000), Slides downscales it. Use a source image at roughly 2× the display size — usually 1200–1600 px wide is enough for a slide.
Transparency lost after saving as PDF
PDF export usually preserves transparency. If you notice a white box, check the PDF viewer — some older viewers render transparency as white.
Advanced: layering with slide background
You can change the slide's own background color (Format → Background) to create a unified look:
- Set the slide background to white, cream, grey, or a brand color.
- Insert your transparent PNGs on top.
- Add text and shapes.
This lets you build complex compositions without needing layers in the transparent image itself.
Presentations best practices
- Keep subject sizes consistent. If you have three people side by side, they should be the same scale.
- Use consistent background colors across slides for a cohesive deck.
- Don't overcrowd. One or two cutouts per slide is plenty.
- Add subtle shadows in Slides. Right-click image → Format options → Drop shadow. Adds depth without cluttering.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google Slides Pro have background removal?
No. Even Google Workspace paid plans don't include background removal in Slides as of 2025. You have to use external tools.
Can I remove the slide background itself?
Yes — Format → Background lets you set any color or image as the slide background. But this doesn't remove image backgrounds, only slide backgrounds.
Will my transparent images show correctly when presenting?
Yes. Google Slides presents transparent PNGs correctly on screen. PDF export also preserves transparency.
