BG Remove for Print on Demand
Create print-ready transparent PNGs for T-shirts, mugs, stickers, tote bags, and posters. Print-on-demand platforms like Printful, Printify, Redbubble, and Teespring all require transparent PNGs at high resolution. BG Remove makes this workflow simple and free.
Why print on demand needs transparent PNGs
When you upload a design to a print-on-demand platform, it's printed directly onto a physical product. If your design has a white or colored background, that background will appear on the product. For a T-shirt, this means a visible square around your design — which looks bad.
A transparent PNG lets the design blend into the product. Only the actual design elements print; everything else stays as the product's material.
The print-on-demand workflow
Step 1 — Create or source your design
Design in Canva, Illustrator, Procreate, or any tool. Or source stock images you have license to use. The design should be at the target print size (e.g., 4500×5400 for a full T-shirt front).
Step 2 — Remove the background
Two paths depending on the design:
- Logos and illustrations on solid background: Use the transparent PNG maker. Fast, local, and works perfectly on flat color backgrounds.
- Photographic subjects: Use the AI background remover. Works on people, products, animals.
Step 3 — Verify transparency
Open the downloaded PNG in any image viewer. Background should be a checkerboard pattern. If it's white, the transparency didn't work — usually because you downloaded as JPG.
Step 4 — Resize if needed
Print-on-demand requires specific dimensions. Use the image resizer to match:
- T-shirt front: 4500 × 5400 px (15×18 inches at 300 DPI)
- T-shirt back: 3600 × 4200 px
- Mug wrap: 2475 × 1155 px (8.25×3.85 inches at 300 DPI)
- Sticker: Varies by size, typically 1500×1500 to 3000×3000
- Poster (18×24): 5400 × 7200 px
Step 5 — Upload to POD platform
Upload the transparent PNG to your print-on-demand platform. Most platforms will accept the file and show a preview on the product.
DPI and resolution explained
Print requires higher resolution than screens:
- Screen: 72–96 DPI is sufficient. A 1080×1080 image looks great on a phone.
- Print: 300 DPI is standard. A 4500×5400 image at 300 DPI is 15×18 inches — the size of a T-shirt design area.
If you export at 1080 px and try to print at 15 inches, the result will be blurry. Always start at 300 DPI print dimensions.
Common print-on-demand mistakes
- Uploading a JPG instead of PNG. JPG doesn't support transparency. The white background will print.
- Insufficient resolution. A 1080×1080 design printed at 15 inches is 72 DPI — blurry. Use at least 4500×5400.
- White fringe around design. JPEG compression or poor removal leaves a white halo that shows up on the shirt. Zoom in at 100% to check.
- Using pure white (#FFFFFF) as design color. Pure white blends into white shirts. Use off-white (#FEFEFE) or a slight cream if you need to.
- Ignoring print area dimensions. Every product has a specific print area. Designs sized for T-shirts won't fit mugs.
Design considerations
Line art and text
For text and line art, use the transparent PNG maker. If your design has anti-aliased edges (smooth, blended edges), the tolerance slider should be low to preserve them.
Photographic subjects
For photos on T-shirts (portraits, pets, products), use AI removal. Watch for hair edges — they may need refinement in a design tool.
Complex illustrations
Multi-color illustrations work well with the transparent PNG maker. Sample the background color, adjust tolerance, and download.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use BG Remove for commercial print-on-demand?
Yes. You own the input and output images. Use them for commercial products, including POD. See our Terms of Service.
What resolution do I need for T-shirt printing?
At least 4500×5400 px for a full T-shirt design (300 DPI at 15×18 inches). Some platforms accept 3000×3600, but higher is safer for quality.
Does AI background removal work on illustrations?
Sometimes. AI is trained on photographs, so it works better on photos than on illustrations. For illustrations on solid backgrounds, use the transparent PNG maker instead.
Will my transparent PNG stay transparent after upload?
Yes, if the platform accepts PNG (which all major POD platforms do). The platform will show a preview; verify it looks correct before publishing.
Can I batch process designs for POD?
Currently one design at a time. Batch processing is on our roadmap.
