How BG Remove Works

BG Remove is designed to make image processing fast, private, and simple. Here's exactly what happens when you use our tools.

1. The AI background remover workflow

Background removal is the only tool on BG Remove that requires server-side processing. It works in five stages:

Stage 1 — Upload

You choose an image (JPG, PNG, or WEBP, up to 10 MB) and the file is transmitted over HTTPS to our processing API. Before upload, we validate the file format and size in the browser to catch obvious problems early.

Stage 2 — Subject detection

Our server runs a trained neural network that scans the image and identifies the foreground subject. The model is trained on millions of examples covering people, products, animals, and common objects. It returns a probability map where each pixel is scored on how likely it belongs to the foreground.

Stage 3 — Mask generation

The probability map is converted into a binary or soft mask. Soft masks allow partial transparency at the edges, which is important for hair, fur, and semi-transparent objects.

Stage 4 — Composite

The mask is applied to the original image to produce the transparent PNG. Areas where the mask is 0 become fully transparent; areas where the mask is 1 stay fully opaque; edge pixels blend between.

Stage 5 — Delivery

The processed PNG is returned to your browser. You can preview it side-by-side with the original, then download it. The file is not stored on our servers after the response is delivered.

2. Browser-based tools

Every other tool — image compressor, resizer, cropper, rotator, color picker, transparent PNG maker, photo enhancer, watermark remover, passport photo maker, profile picture maker, product photo editor — runs entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. This means:

  • No upload. Your images never leave your device.
  • Instant. Processing happens at the speed of your CPU, typically milliseconds.
  • Works offline. Once the page loads, no internet connection is required.
  • Private by design. There is nothing to store, because nothing reaches a server.

3. What happens to my data

For the background remover:

  • Your image is transmitted over HTTPS.
  • It is processed by our AI model in memory.
  • The result is sent back to your browser.
  • The image and result are discarded from server memory immediately after the response.
  • Server logs record the request timestamp and status but not the image content.

For all other tools, no data leaves your device at all.

4. Technology stack

The frontend is deliberately minimal:

  • HTML5 — semantic markup with proper landmarks
  • CSS3 — custom properties, grid, flexbox, container queries (where supported)
  • Vanilla JavaScript — no framework, no build step, no bundler
  • Canvas API — for all local image processing
  • Fetch API — for the background removal API calls
  • Cloudflare Pages — static hosting with global CDN

We do not use React, Vue, Angular, or jQuery. We do not ship megabytes of JavaScript to make a simple image tool work. This keeps the site fast on low-end devices and slow networks.

5. Why we chose this architecture

Two reasons: performance and privacy. Most online image tools upload your file to their server even when they don't need to. That's a privacy risk, a bandwidth cost, and a latency penalty. By running every tool that can run locally only locally, we give you results in milliseconds instead of seconds — and we never see your images unless we absolutely need to (which is only for AI background removal).

6. Limitations

No tool is perfect, and we don't claim otherwise:

  • The AI model struggles with logos, transparent subjects, and images where foreground and background share colors.
  • Browser tools are limited by your device's memory. Very large images (over 40 megapixels on desktop, over 8 on mobile) may fail.
  • JPEG compression introduces noise that can affect color-tolerance removal in the transparent PNG maker.

We document these limitations on each tool's page.
