Common aspect ratios explained
- 1:1 — square. Used for Instagram posts, profile pictures, and avatars.
- 16:9 — widescreen. YouTube thumbnails, cover photos, and landscape videos.
- 9:16 — vertical. Instagram and TikTok stories, Reels, and Shorts.
- 4:3 — classic photo format. Cameras, presentations, and older displays.
- 4:5 — Instagram's portrait post format.
- 2.5:1 — wide banner. Twitter headers and website hero images.
Cropping best practices
- Don't crop away context. Leave a small margin around your subject — it makes the image feel less cramped.
- Follow the rule of thirds. Place your subject slightly off-center for a more engaging composition.
- Consider the destination. Crop to the exact ratio required by the platform you're uploading to, so it doesn't get re-cropped automatically.
- Start from a high-resolution original. Cropping reduces the number of pixels in the final image. Start from the largest version you have.
Frequently asked questions
Does cropping reduce image quality?
Cropping reduces the pixel dimensions of the image but does not change the quality of the remaining pixels. If you crop to a small area and then display it large, it will look pixelated because fewer pixels are available.
Can I crop a transparent PNG?
Yes. The transparency is preserved in the output.
What formats can I export?
Output is always PNG so transparency is preserved. If you need a JPG, upload the PNG to the image compressor and choose JPG as output format.
Is the tool free?
Yes. No signup, no watermark, unlimited use for personal and commercial projects.
